You know, I didn't experience this until I went to NY 2 yrs ago. We were leaving a family party when a young lady came up to my husband and went "Hi Frat!" (he had on letters, I didn't). He inquired about her sorority and she was actually my soror, which was where he directed her.
He wasn't
trying to be rude, but neither of us had heard of that before. Down here, the affiliations are pretty traditional also.
