I was just coming back to this thread to edit that into my post when I realized that you had already mentioned it.
The same thing happened with my StarTac. At first, I thought people were mumbling or they weren't speaking loud enough but after constantly telling people that I couldn't hear them, I realized that it was my crappy phone.
