My old house is right by the border of Irvington and Newark, NJ, in a town called Maplewood. One time, I came home alone and our back door was locked strangely - the doorknob lock, which we never use (we use the lock-on-its-own, above the doorknob). Our entire house had been ransacked and thousands of dollars worth of stuff had been taken.
And our neighbor's car was broken into during my graduation party... I've chased bike thieves down the street as they stole my bike from my backyard... my friend's car was stolen outside of my other's friend's house while in the backyard we were having a party... my other friend's car was stolen from the parking lot our community's pool while we were all lifeguarding...
I definately lock all doors, in my car and home, and I check backseats before I get into my car, and I listen carefully when I enter my home alone before turning on a television or radio.
