The only possible and slightly coherant (which is more than I can say for me right now - codine for pain good)... is that the two brothers went as a theme on their nicknames or future careers. Ie. Prince William as a lion, representing royalty; while Prince Harry went as a facist/nazi (apparently quite a ball buster in cadets)... of course if he had worn simply an Afrika Korps uniform without the armband all this might not be an issue (or as big as one). Please not that I think that in no way does it excuse him... after all he should expect to be in the public eye, and act accordingly... I mean come on did no one go "Hmmm... this might be a bad idea?"
