Notice how the first thing mentioned about this young man - in the lead paragraph, even before his name is given - is that he's in a fraternity? And nothing is said about other activities he might have been involved in. The implication is that fraternities = booze. People tend to overindulge on their 21st birthdays - he might have gotten just as drunk and ended up in a coma whether he'd joined a fraternity or not.
I pray this young man pulls through and wakes up.
