Another great site to monitor things happening at the federal level is the library to congress site, which was in the initial email. http://thomas.loc.gov.

The draft bill issue has been a mess to me. It was introduced by Democrats who were not pleased with the way the "war" in Iraq is proceeding and wanted to draw attention to the historical practice of providing outs to the privileged populations children. The real point of the bill was to say if you are going to take us down the road to war, they the draft is going to be equal opportunity. Your kids are as likely to have to go as the average family. The unfortunate spin that has been placed on the bill has been created by removing its actual intent from the discussion and trying to paint its sponsors as advocates for an actual draft rather than advocates for an equitable one if there is one. All across the country I saw Republican candidates, in particular and uninformed populations run with this story with out doing any research into the issues. It was not an accident that the bill suddenly made it up for a vote just before the election. It was a good example of how a little information can be as bad or worse then none.
