The S.S. stands for Sebastian Spering Kresge, who started what now is KMart in Detroit in 1899. The KMart name dates back to 1962.

BTW, the Nazi SS stood for
Schutzstaffel which literally translates to 'protection squad'. Unlike the Nazi party army, the SA (
Sturmabteilung, literally "assault detachment"), the SS was originally formed as a personal bodyguard for Hitler and other high-ranking Nazi party officials. Himmler later corrupted it into the Aryan master-race army/extermination machine.
