Interesting. I've known of chapters that seemed to favor Phi Gam over Fiji, but I don't think I've run into any that thought of Fiji as offensive. But it's a big country.

OMG. Wearing letters promoted positive PR regardless of when recruitment is. I would not know (or care) that KU's recruitment is before classes. Doesn't matter. There are plenty of women who are likely-joiners who are not freshman.

Not to mention that PR and reputation extend well past recruitment.... it's not all about rush.

I could maybe understand if someone was like the mall, or work, or going to the dentist, etc. isn't the best time to wear letters but if school isn't the appropriate time to wear letters then when is?

Why not the mall or the dentist?

We're not talking about our official pins. We're talking about lettered sweatshirts, tshirts, jackets, and so forth. Correct?

I've found that my letters make me an American magnet when I'm abroad! It's great because I get to talk to all these wee uns about sorority life and explain to them that it's not like the TV has you believe. I actually got talking to an American from Boston last night in the laundry because I was folding my letter shirts.

And to the non-Americans who ask about what the T and Triangle mean...it means that I get to go on about how awesome Greek life is and how proud I am of my sorority. (and I taught 2 swiss and a Canadian how to sing the Greek alphabet in a hostel in Italy!).

So in general...wearing my letters is a DAILY thing for me, I always have my lavalier on and not tucked into my shirt. I like the questions, even if they are pretty funny some times.

And since Otterbein has pretty relaxed recruitment (not unusual to pledge women of all levels, even seniors!), wearing letters is an important thing to do. It's always pretty cool when people come up to you and say, "So why do I always see these funny shirts around? what's the craic with that?" (ok, maybe not craic, but still!)

I don't know if it really offends them, but they make it clear they don't like being called that. I guess the southern conservative chapters believe that "Fiji" has a different reputation elsewhere. I wouldn't really know I guess.

I can tell you at KU, most chapters typically take either no or 1 sophomore. No one older than that for sure.

I wonder why they think it has a different rep. I know at UT they refer as FIJI and I would argue that they were one of the top chapters in the country without question.

Well I'm not sure exactly what he meant, but i'd assume he's referring to the image FIJI may have nationally (outside the south). For example, some friends in good southern Beta chapters have big problems with Beta being known nationally as the best GLO for homosexuals.

That's interesting about the reason why Phi Gam isn't called FIJI at Alabama. I had always wondered about that. The lady at one of the Greek stores in Tuscaloosa had to send back some keychains she had gotten for them that said FIJI because she didn't know beforehand that the guys wouldn't buy them. I never really understood why they don't go by FIJI at Alabama though.

In my sorority, we're not allowed to do *anything* in our letters that "might serve to damage the good name of the Sorority," whatever that means. But we're actually not allowed to do anything that might damage the Sorority's reputation when we're not wearing our letters, either. The only thing we are specifically forbidden from doing in our letters is drinking.

I know that my chapter definitely implements the whole be classy in your letters thing. You have to have makeup on and have your hair done. You are also not allowed to cuss, drink, smoke, talk about doing any of these things or be in a bar in your letters. We see our letters as sacred and therefore you should not associate them with anything that is less then that.

We have similar requirements, however we must look polished. Most girls in my chapter see polished as make up and hair done, however, there are some girls who don't do everything. I don't know about seeing our letters as sacred, we just want to put the best image forward of our chapter and greek life as a whole because there are many people who don't know what the letters mean and only know them as greek. We are also not allowed to work out in our letters or have them on out bottoms.

I would hope that my sisters have the same take on wearing our letters that I have - namely, that when you are wearing your letters you shouldn't do anything that is not in keeping with our Creed, or that might cause damage to our reputation. I will tell you that having my letters on my car has kept me from even THINKING of cutting anyone off in traffic - and in fact I make an effort to be extra-special nice in Houston traffic (no small feat!)

I am totally against butt letters, but wow on not working out in letters. If I wear my letters (or have my Alpha Gam waterbottle) with me while working out I feel as if I'm really living the part of The Purpose about "prize health and vigor of body." As an alumna I wear random shirts from previous rushes or events to the gym, as so do most other collegians and alumni and alumnae. I am more likely to wear something that identifies my membership at the gym than I am to wear my badge.
