				Audition help!

Bump! I need a Broadway song to sing for an audition in August. It's for It's A Wonderful Life: The Musical. I couldn't find anything else by the composer (Bruce Greer?), but the female songs seem to be in the soprano range, and with a bit of a 1940's/1950's vibe. My first thought was to do something from Anything Goes, but the best songs from that show are mezzo/alto. Any suggestions?

Umm, I would recommend looking at The Simple Joys of Maidenhood, With a Song in my Heart, or You'll Never Walk Alone... they are all classic soprano solos... and seen as good audition pieces...

I'm watching the Tonys right now! Billy Elliot just won Best Musical...but before that I was already rushing to post here how much I'm now DYING to see it after seeing the dance number in tonight's show. I saw the movie years ago and loved it. Has anybody seen the musical version?

Me too. I was pretty ho-hum about some of the performances tonight, and just Broadway this year in general (a lot of revivals and movies-turned-into-musicals), but that kid in the Billy Elliot number was amazing.

I've decided to go see Wicked on Bway for my birthday! I'm so excited. I had long ago decided not to go because, after seeing Idina Menzel sing "Defying Gravity" live, I just couldn't imagine someone else in the role. But a woman at my internship convinced me to go and I'm super geeked.
ETA: I just saw the Idina chat a couple pages back and I agree with all of the above! I traveled 4+ hours to see her TWICE. I had a blast both times and I'd so do it again. Her concerts are AWESOME to the nth degree!

I saw Wicked the first time with Shoshana Bean as Elpheba and Meg Hilty as G(a)linda, and I can tell you there were people in the theatre that thought they were better than Idina/Kristin. Give others a chance.

I also saw Megan Hilty & Shoshana Bean in Wicked and they were both incredible! The second time I saw it with Eden Espinoza and Megan and again, incredible!

This just may be Broadway blasphemy, but I really don't like Shoshana Bean's voice. I just watched a youtube of her singing "I'd Give it All For You" (one of my very favorite songs) with Jason Robert Brown, and I actually liked him better, even though he's not a very strong singer. But, hey, when you can write music like JRB, you don't NEED to be a strong singer to be amazing!!!

I haven't posted or moderated anything here in almost a year, but have lurked every couple of weeks, and saw some posts on this forum a while ago, so thought I'd add this. You don't have to tell anyone else I was here.

Had a great weekend in New York visiting with the son. Not a lot to report on him, (doing a lot of regional work, and auditioning a lot and has a couple of good prospects, but it's tough in this economy) but we did see three shows in two days.

"Rock of Ages" was really fun. Not being of an 80's rock fan, I wasn't looking for too much, but it was very good. Great voices and some pretty funny stuff. I liked it a lot.

I was really excited about seeing "Hair" (being a child of the 60's), but while it was good, I wasn't all that happy with it. Good voices, etc., but I guess after seeing it originally in the early 70's, I expected the same excitement. Maybe it's just that we aren't in the middle of Vietnam, The Civil Rights Movement, etc. The stuff on the Tony's this year was good. The understudy for Claude, who worked with the son in regional theatre came up to say hello at intermission, which was fun.

The best part of the weekend (theatre-wise) was seeing "In The Heights." Again, not being much of a rap fan, I was not expecting much. It was outstanding! Best thing I've seen in quite a while. Again, one of the chorus members and understudies who worked with the son in regional came out to see us, and a couple of his friends from OU happened to be at the same performance, so that was fun, too. I'd highly recommend the show. It's no wonder it won the Tony last year.

I bought "the cheap seats" online for Hair, did the lottery for Rock of Ages, and some slightly obstructed seats for In the Heights (after not being selected in the lottery), so saw all three for just over $100 for each of us.

Seeing "Osage County" next weekend here in Denver.

Ahem. Would that be Ohio, Oglethorpe or Oklahoma?

All of the above, TS. Don't want to be specific. Trying to protect the innocent.

Thanks for the kind words, Sydney -- but I'm not really "back," just checking in on a few threads every now and then, and still getting a few private messages. Hope you enjoy the show.

Take care, everyone.
