James:

Kappa Sigma has more than just recently recolonized at LSU. Gamma Chapter was rechartered on January 12, 2002, with 59 refounding fathers [see Page 4 of the Spring, 2002 issue of The Caduceus]. Gamma has had several solid pledge classes since then. So the chapter has been rechartered for 2 and1/2 years, and is already once again a large chapter.

LSU does indeed have a stong Greek system. That is a two-edged sword. On one hand, the potential to attract a large pledge class does exist. But on the other hand, the LSU Greek system is VERY competitive, with almost all our major rivals also having strong chapters there. So while attracting a 40 to 50 man pledge class might be noteworthy, it would not be particularly remarkable [according to the Winter 2003-2004 and Spring, 2004 issues of The Caduceus, Gamma did not do quite that well last year, taking 36 Fall pledges and 45 overall pledges]. So the 86-man pledge class in the Fall rush period alone IS indeed TRULY remarkable.

It seems to me that an 86-man pledge class is really just too large. How are all the pledges going to get to know each other, and how is the active chapter going to get to know all the pledges, in the 60-day pledging period that the SEC has mandated? But this is slightly off topic. I don't want to trigger a series of replies about the controversial 60-day pledge program. That can be the subject of a separate thread if anyone wants to start it. This thread is supposed to be about fall pledging numbers.
