I've changed many doorknobs. I probably did my first one around age 8 when I was just playing around with doorknobs I found in a closet. You really won't even need instructions. Fairly self-explanatory. Just use a screwdriver.
Personally, I wouldn't ask the landlord. They'll never notice. And if they do, it's 5 minutes to fix it back.
