"Temporary" was supposedly Bush's name in Skull and Bones. Everyone was supposed to come up with their own name and he couldn't think of one so they called him "temporary" and it stuck. At least that's what I read in a recent vanity fair. (But the article was written by none other than our dear Alexandra Robbins, so I'd take it with a rather large grain of salt.)
As far as secret societies for women, I'm sure there have been many over the years, both co-ed and women only. I don't think its a matter of women being better at keeping secrets - I just don't think any of them have the "prestige" of Skull and Bones. But even Skull and Bones admits women now.
