I would say trying to avoid any conversation whatsoever. In this situation she is damned if she does, damned if she doesn't...if you DO say you want to concentrate on work or something similar, you're implicitly saying that the other people conversing aren't doing so and that makes EVERYONE pissed at you.
You're right, I am projecting. I wish I could "project" my boss's ass out of the state but I don't have time/space power yet.
