GC friends,

I was talking about moving to New York with some people who reminded me that salt is used on the roads during winter months. I drive a '94 Honda Civic HB that, according to these people, will be rusted out by the end of my first year.

First, is this true?

Second, if it is true, how do people living in New York deal with this?

By the way, I'll be in upstate New York (Nyack) where it is, supposedly, a lot colder than NYC. Is THAT even true??
If you take care of your car you will have no problems. NYC and Nyack have similar temperatures during the winter months. It is cold period for the most part. But we are not the arctic circle by any means. If you take your car to the carwash it will be fine and it really doesn't snow all that much anymore here, at least not like I remember when I was a kid. Salt is only used on the roads when there is a snow/ice storm, not everyday during the winter months. The majority of the time in the winter it is just cold and gray here.
