A pet squirrel would be nice but they carry rabies. We once rescued a squirrel that had been clipped by a car. He lived a few days but then started to really suffer, so we euthanized him. 
Screens on the window would be a good idea.

Euthanized a squirrel? That's almost as bad as the time I took my girlfriend to the vet to have her hamster "put to sleep". That little fella wouldn't have lasted another 15 minutes anyhow, but we just had to spend the $70.00 to do it.
As sad as it made her, I keep remembering having this hamster sitting on the vet's table with an oxygen mask on its face (it had a severe respiratory infection).
