It depends on the GLO's national policy, to a certain extent. Had MIT revoked recognition of LXA altogether, nationals policy is to follow suit, and close the chapter until the university is willing to re-recognize (recolonize) the unit. From what I know, LXA was very fortunate, if not outright lucky, to have probation extended.

There are other national GLO's that will allow a chapter to function even without campus recognition (I know Sigma Pi has done this, but not sure about others)...it all depends of course on the circumstances surrounding the reasons recognition is pulled.
