It's understandable that you're sad -- I'm sorry to hear that he hurt you.
But...did you ever have a discussion about being exclusive? I think that unless two people come to an agreement that they will be exclusive and not date/sleep with anyone else, both people are free to do what they want. Of course, if you did have the discussion, he's an ass and you should run far, far away from him and not give him a second thought, and if you're morally bothered by him sleeping with other people than it's to be expected that you'd be upset by what he did.
Did he confess his love to you after mere flirting? You mention that you knew him before and then you flirted and then he said he was in love with you. If there's not more to it than that, he sounds like a little boy who mistakes love with something else, and in that situation too you're better off without him.
It sucks that relationship-type things can be so difficult, but if it makes you feel any better, all that suckiness means that someday when you find someone perfect for you, you will really, REALLY appreciate it.
