Enevitable cons: English professors have the tendency to be the most anal-rentetive human beings on the face of the planet, you often have the urge to correct people when they're talking and edit random emails, you have to read hundreds of pages of literature per week, and by the time you graduate you won't want to write another paper for as long as you live.
This is great!!! I'm a grad student in English (about to graduate), and I always have to explain why an English major is useful/worthwhile. I love your comment about becoming familiar with other fields. You should write a department pamphlet

Erica

P.S. My urge to correct grammar is almost compulsive!!
