Neither models nor pageant winners are necessarily beautiful. It's much more important that models be thin and tall than beautiful. I could find plenty of models -- even supermodels -- that are entirely plain-looking without professional makeup and hair and the right lighting. Pageant contestants are more likely to be attractive (especially on the national level) but even a quick look around the Miss America/Miss USA websites shows that some of them are merely well put-together but definitely not gorgeous.

Furthermore, women who primarily base their self-worth on looks tend to be even more self-conscious than average women because many of them think that their entire worth as a human being depends on their looks. For example, studies show that attractive women are more likely to develop eating disorders than plain women -- in part because the attractive girls grew up hearing "You're so beautiful" whereas the plain girls grew up hearing "You're so smart" or "You're so nice" or "You're such a great athlete/singer/dancer/whatever" -- and so a lot of women whose good looks overshadow their other good qualities worry that if they lose their looks there won't be anything left to love about them. They also tend to be much more fine-tuned when it comes to changes in their appearance, like five extra pounds. So yeah, even women who get external validation from things like modelling and pageants can be very insecure about the way they look.

Not to mention that any boyfriend who DOESN'T tell his girlfriend why he's attracted to her is a pretty ishtty boyfriend.
