On my campus the guys generally asked women who were friends with some or all of the guys and were always willing to help out. They also chose some girlfriends. They did frown upon girls who "openly campaigned".
I was one for IIKA. I knew a most of the other girls and a lot of the guys. After going to several events and just being myself the topic came up in a conversation with one of my better guy friends and I mentioned that I would be interested and that's all it took. I did eventually start dating one of the guys...and then I went and married him
