i agree 100% with anchor alum. we had cases where rushees didn't even know they had recs for a particular group. we often found current (and former) teachers and neighbors willing to vouch for someone we were interested in. granted, they knew the girl and were not blindly touting someone.

i've also heard of girls who don't bother getting recs from cousins, aunts or other distant relatives because they weren't considered legacies. a rec's a rec no matter how you put it. it's no guarantee, but a rec can sometimes make the difference in getting your foot in the door and not being invited back to the next round. don't be shy either - ask your neighbors. ask your teachers. the mother of a close friend. ask women you work for. you'd be surprised at who's willing to help you.
