We've done rock-a-thon before and other sororities have done swing-a-thons, bounce-a-thons, and teeter-totter-a-thons. Basically the concept is to have shifts of a certain number of sisters (I think all of our school's chapters have generally used a minimum of two) to perform the event throughout the course of a 24 hour period.

You would need to check with your school to make sure that it is okay for you to have people on campus for that amount of time (basically making sure that security knows what's going on and will come by to check on you) and fill out any necessary paperwork that the student life/scheduling/campus police have for you.

Then you would need to secure the materials (two rocking chairs/basketballs/two seater garden swing/tetter-totter) and have members sign up to work a shift (we used to do 1-2 hour shifts).

You could raise the money in a few separate ways... You could have each sister responsible for raising a certain amount (whether she donated it out of her own pocket or got a dollar or two from as many people as possible)... Or you could have sponsors that give a certain amount per hour that you keep the event going... You could solicit businesses to make charitable donations... You could set a bucket out and collect money from people that pass by... Or you could combine them all if you'd like.

Taking an ad in the school paper and putting up signs are good ways to promote your event...that way people know ahead of time that you're going to be sponsoring an event to raise money for a philanthropy.
