A school or hospital might hold one say to raise funds, charging people for a pitch (place for their car) where they'd all be in a car park/playground whatever. In rows, each person brings their 'stuff' and sells it - typically they'll put the items for sale on a table in front of the trunk of their parked car.

Ah... OK.  sounds more like a combination flea market/rummage sale... many US zoning laws have some restriction or other regarding these type of sales.
