Identified by their colors of deep red and hunter green, Wayne State University's newest fraternity, Phi Kappa Psi, offers potential recruits a chance to be a part of history and create lifelong friendships.
Phi Kappa Psi was introduced as the newest fraternity on campus on November 25, 2003. Other Greek organizations and the university's student body have welcomed this social fraternity, and Phi Kappa Psi is proving to be exceptional in their progress.
In just three months, Phi Kappa Psi has formed a fraternity of four active members and recruited two pledges: President Steve DeMatteis, Matt Barranca, Jeramy Mooneyhan, Joe Sattler, Rodrick Brown and William Gray, respectively.
The fraternity bases its principles on leadership, brotherhood, scholarship and service. Leadership, however, is their primary focus as they lead each other into establishing what has already become a well-respected organization.
"In 20 years from now, when I visit Wayne State, I will get to see this fraternity that we started," Barranca said.
The gentlemen of Phi Kappa Psi are working on financially establishing their fraternity by selling Little Caesar's Pizza Kits around campus. They are also contributing to the community through donations to the Boys' and Girls' Club of America.
"We envision this fraternity and where it's going to go," Barranca said.
For the first group of men who have pledged themselves to the fraternity, their dream is to build a strong brotherhood that is respected throughout WSU. They aspire to build a reputable name that will remain recognized well into the future.
Forming friendships throughout the school is also a priority to Phi Kappa Psi. An essential goal of their colony includes maintaining strong relationships with other Greek organizations.
Because they are still in need of members, Phi Kappa Psi is holding constant recruitment meetings for those interested in joining a new association within WSU.
Phi Kappa Psi will host their first social at 8 p.m. Friday, February 27, in the Student Center, Hilberry A room.
Regular meetings are held Mondays at 5 p.m. in the Student Center, Room 299.
