TROY, Mich. -- Federal authorities are stepping in to find whoever spewed insults at customers at a Burger King in Troy.
The Federal Communications Commission has radio direction-finding equipment for detecting illicit transmitters.
The person broke into the drive-in order wireless intercom several times last week, making insults to customers.
"You don't need a couple of Whoppers. You are too fat. Pull ahead," Officer Gerry Scherlink said is an example of what the culprit told customers at the drive-through speaker.
The person was tapping into the wireless frequency at the restaurant located at 14 Mile and John R roads. Police believe the culprit is watching and broadcasting from close range.
The pranks began more than a week ago and continued until last Tuesday, according to a Local 4 report. They reportedly occurred around 3 p.m.
But what has managers concerned is the profanity the man is using, according to police.
A drive-through customer told Local 4 that if he had children with him in the car and someone used profanity, he would have been upset.
Burger King franchise owner Tony Versace issued the following statement in response to the incidents:
"We apologize to our customers who've been insulted by the use of this drive-through speaker."
Management at the fast-food restaurant was reportedly trying to change the radio frequency used for the speakers.
The pranks are considered a misdemeanor in Troy and could bring three months in jail and fines for anyone convicted, Local 4 reported.
Federal law also carries more severe penalties than state law.
