I explain to people it's quite simple: A-may. I'm happy if they can get out "Ahmay" (which I hate).
Sometimes, though, I've had people say "Oh, that's too difficult. I'll just call you Amy." WTF? Next time I get that, I think I"ll be sassy and say "okay, while we're making up names for each other, I'll call you ______ (fill in the blank with whatever comes to mind).
