Pardon the thread crash folks; I'd like to throw in two cents on this.
When I first came on GC as a PNAM a year ago, I was just beginning to re - learn about NPC and NPHC orgs. Like any collegiate newbie, I was a total sponge--absorbing everything and very sensitive to whatever was posted.
Occasionally I run across a thread where emotions got out of control and people posted comments that were highly offensive to my faith, my personal politics, etc. Some were outright attacks of what I saw as an ignorant, malicious, slanderous, etc nature.
Now if the signature happened to have the person's letters in it, or if I knew what their org was from other posts, it planted a seed of doubt in my mind as to whether this org was one I wanted to meet with and discuss an AI pursuit.
It is easy to say, "Oh, well, one person is not representative of the org...." if YOU are not the one on the vulnerable side, looking for your home. Even if you can rationalize logically, there is still a subconscious/emotional question, is this opinion typical of the members of this org?
So to bolster Greegrrl's and DeltAlum's posts on this topic, keep in mind what is posted (I'm directing this to myself as well as my husband's letters are in my sig) and remember WORDS MEAN THINGS. From the outside looking in, I've learned that one of the positive learning experiences of Greek life is that each person's actions affect other people. It's easy to dismiss that idea if you can't immediately see that result yourself but forums like this make it obvious is one person screws up, they affect the image not only of their own org, but other GLOs as well. Ditto for positive actions by an individual.
