IMO, doing those things doesn't mean that they are the "kind of person who doesn't mind looking really foolish for no reason," rather it is a humbling gesture. the salute, as goofy as it looks, is okay with me. and also, i look at it like this: if you are willing to carry a piece of meat around on a stick for a week, you must really want this. and if you have that type of excitement and enthusiasm while TRYING to be a member, you'll probably carry it over once you ARE a member.
