To you, perhaps. Allow me to point out a couple of things. First, I televised Colorado Football for years, and probably know more than most about the Big XII. But I've also lived in Big Ten, ACC, Big East and other conference territory. I grew up in Columbus -- a fairly well known college football town.

Second, Ohio University was O.U. about 65 years BEFORE Oklahoma was founded around 1870 as I recall. Ohio is celebrating it's Bi-Centennial this year, having been founded in 1804.

Third, I have a son who attends Oklahoma, so my comment wasn't a put-down in any way. I could have said the same thing about Oregon. Where I come from, OSU is Ohio State and Oklahoma State isn't even on their radar.

I've used this story before, but I think it makes the point:

My wife and I both graduated from O.U.

My son attends O.U.

My daughter graduated from O.U. after spending two years at U.N.C.

Translated, that means that my wife and I graduated from Ohio University.

My son attends Oklahoma.

My daughter graduated from Ohio University after spending two years at the University of Northern Colorado.

See how some might be confused by the initials?

My suggestion is that, like the journalism schools teach, the full name should be used first, then the abbreviation (letters) can be used. Then nobody will be confused.

Having said all of that, I think the Sooners should destroy Texas -- but on any given week, strange things happen.

Edited to say that I have taken my fellow Ohio University Bobcat alumni to task for the same thing.
