Thanks ZTAngel... with so many houses unhoused, you think that many of the organizations alumni would be pushing the university to house them especially in the South where alumni support seems to be the strongest.

Actually, since we have so many Chi O alum in the Orlando area, money isn't the problem. We're just waiting on UCF to grant us land. Other than that, we're ready to build. It's really just getting the "OK" from UCF.

I know I have only been in Chi O for a couple of months, but the house issue hasn't really been an "issue." We have meetings at the Student Union. I always see the sisters out and about, so I still feel the benefits of being in a sorority. It's my first time away from home, so it's nice to have a family at school.

As ZTAngel said, UCF faces a very unique challenge-- it is growing at an astonishing rate. We nicknamed UCF "Under Construction Forever" due to rising popularity, prestige and student population at the university. UCF is a commuter school no more. I was very proud to attend UCF during the time when buildings, housing, parking garages and even our student union grew up around me, practically overnight. Student housing is in such demand, in fact, that the university purchased two off-campus apartment complexes (with multiple phases and buildings!) just to keep up. I think constructing new sorority and fraternity houses would help ease the student housing shortage, but it still needs to be determined "where" Greek Park 2 will be. Currently, off campus, in an area affectionately referred to as "the ghetto," are several fraternity houses. The guys lease a building of apartments and members reside there, and have their parties, etc., from these "Quad" apartments. IE: Lambda Chi, DTD, Pi Kapp, etc. Having a house in the ghetto is better than none at all, to be sure, but it is still much more of a status symbol to have on-campus housing. The sororities without houses on campus do not have houses here, but often, off-campus apartment complexes will set up a deal to have an entire bldg of a sorority there. Not all of the members live there (UCF sororities average just under 200 members and have enormous new member classes!), but it's a fun set-up nontheless, and b/c the chapters with houses on campus can't house everyone, even those sororoties will set up an apartment block at nearby apartment complexes.

So, to summarize, no TURTLES, no Greek Park 2, at least not for a while.

I think the reason why the Sierra Club has gotten so involved is because the planned area for Greek Park 2 is on some wetlands. My opinion: Florida is one big swamp so why are we trying to save this one?

Well, that's what our advisors have told us. *sheepish grin* Wonder where they got misinformed?

I also know that at least Kappa is pushing on the housing issue. Trouble is, I think it's basically out of everyone's hands.

The turtle rumors have been around forever. Not exactly sure how they got started.

I remember hearing my freshman year that there was this one turtle left who was part of an endangered/protected turtle species. UCF could not build on the turtle's land until the environmentalist groups were 100% sure this turtle had died of natural causes. Supposedly, people had seen this turtle in years but the turtle was still around because of "migration patterns".

I think "The Future" wrote an article a couple of years ago that said this rumor was completely false.

I was hoping Greek Park 2 would be built by the time I graduated. It was supposed to be underway by my sophomore year.

We definetly need a Greek Park 2. There are so many unhoused Greeks...the Ghetto is definetly not cutting it!

I just went through rush this semester too at UCF!! I'm glad that there are more UCF people in here. I have heard about the turtle thing since last year. I have no clue whether it is true or not. I would really just like to know the real reason why we are not allowed to build there. I also thought that they were going to start bulding last year. Just as long as it is started by the time I graduate, I will be one happy girl.

I think we should overthrow Knightro (our UCF mascot) and make the Gopher Turtle our new mascot. I also would like to point out, that if the turtles truly exist---for anyone who has seen our campus.... at least 1/4 of the campus is wildlife reserve! Plenty of room for the the wildlife to go!

Also, if GP2 can't be adjacent to the current Greek Park, there are enough areas on campus that can be turned into Greek Housing. UCF has had to purchase off-campus facilities to house the overflow of students-- with 10% or more of campus being Greek, it would certainly behoove the university to create housing for those students-- who represent the more active campus members within student senate, campus clubs and activities, etc. And it would certainly increase the amount of alumni traffic for those non-housed Greeks to get on-campus housing (some of our most loyal university alumni are Greek).

Ok, off soapbox.... this housing issue was a problem when I was in school! I had the wonderful opportunity to live in the ADPi house and I would love to have all of my UCF Panhellenic Sisters to have that same experience.

Me again.... I am burned out at work, so I decided to go turtle hunting....

I found this statement from 2001:
This [northwest quadrant] area was historically utilized as an unauthorized gopher tortoise relocation area in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s by UCF professors. It is apparent from the large number of abandoned burrows and by documented research of the past relocations that this site is not ideal habitat for gopher tortoises. Its lack of management and close proximity to a busy intersection appears to have contributed to this fact.

Take THAT, Sierra Club! (Nothing against conservation or environmental groups at ALL, but these animals are not native to that habitat and have not thrived in that habitat. Anyone who is concerned for the welfare of these animals should collect them and find an appropriate location)


So it appears I was wrong about the turtle rumor. I apologize. I sat through many student senate meetings in the 90's and this topic came up frequently and was debated strongly.

However, if by the early 90's this relocation practice ceased and the animals were not thriving, the environmentalists should have practiced due diligence for a more appropriate breeding and sustaining environment, either on campus or off. Keeping them in an unfriendly environment is nothing short of animal cruelty and cutting off the natural growth and progress of the Univerity of Central Florida. With the abundant wetlands in the Central Florida area, the tortises would be better served in a more hospitable environment. Shame on those 1980's UCF professors for their hasty relocation of these animals.
