I realize this wasn't the main part of your post, but I'm a bit of an environmental freak sometimes so I have to say:
The only reason we're dependent on oil is because we (as a collective group of Americans) don't demand other solutions. There are plenty of alternatives for energy. (Read about Iceland's energy sources).
