You can find inexpensive hotels, or really good deals on the better hotels.
Edited to add, the only problem (although it might actually help to spread out the costs), is that when you make a reservation, your credit card is charged right then. When you check out, the only bill you should have would be for incidentals like phone calls, meals, etc.
