The play is fairly mundane for modern audiences, and the movie adaption is just poorly done, in my opinion. The last scene especially, with the pies? It was so close to salvaging the whole movie (with the euthanasia take), but the rest just comes off as hokey compared to the theatrical productions.

However, if you were expecting Romeo and Juliet, then it probably came across as quite weird - now, the re-do of the Tempest, that was frigging bizarrely done.
