				ucsb rush!

OK, so it looks very likely that i will be participating in Rush at UC Santa Barbara. Now, as someone who is completely alien to greek life (I'm from England), I was wondering if some of you guys could give me some information on what type of clothes to take with me. I haven't a clue how formal it gets, I have a ton of dresses, but i'm not sure if they would be the right colour or anything! Also, just for general visiting of houses, would it be casual dress or a mixture.I'm leaving in 2 weeks, so obviously, i'm going to have to get myself in gear and go shopping if i need new things!

Just to describe what kind of dresses i have
I have one black strapless, which is kind of like something SJP might wear, it's not long but just below my knees, with some cute white detailing on the bottom.
I have one long plain back dress, spaghetti straps, haven't worn it in a while, not even sure if it fits!
A pink dress, i suppose a "cocktail dress" , beading on one side of it in the shape of a flower, knee length, spaghetti straps.
I have one long white skirt, which i could get a white top for (i think i need something white if i bid anywhere...?)

I'm very excited, nervous, worried, so i don't want to turn up looking silly in anything inapropriate! Thanks girls!

 Hannah

Hannah! I think I remember you posting before b/c of your name! Have you tried looking on your college's website? You could do a search for the University of California at Santa Barbara. I just think that its so awsome that you are rushing! What a great way to get involved with American college life! I am living in Germany right now and can't wait to see England! And hopefully the Princes!

Congratulations on your decision to go through recruitment. What a great experience to add to your list of new experiences as you come to California. Did the Greek Life office send you a list of appropriate attire for the week? When I went through (it was called rush in those days since you are rushing through each house making a decision), I was sent a booklet which showed pictures of girls modeling the type clothing you needed each day-- casual for the first 2, church clothing, and then formal wear for preference.
Another thing you will needed to take into account. CA is having WEIRD weather. We are in the middle of experiencing hotter and muggier weather because of a hurricane sitting off the coast of Mexico. By the time you get here, it could still be hot, or it could be down to low 60's. Make sure you plan for all contingencies.

Good luck. Keep us informed as you go through recruitment.

You BEST and most ACCURATE resource would be the Office of Greek Life itself:http://www.sa.ucsb.edu/osl/GreekLife/index.asp

			Hi Hannah!
I don't mean to interrupt your thread about rushing at UCSB, *however*, I wanted to make sure you got this message!

I live in Bristol (I'm a postgrad at the University of Bristol) and there are a few other people on GreekChat that live in the UK also. Kittyuk (Stephanie) and UKAXO (Caroline) live in/near to London. Our only male, Decadence (Richard), attends Nottingham Trent Uni but is spending his summer term back home in London. Anyway, Stephanie, Caroline and I are Americans and Rich is English.

In your post above you said that you would be leaving in 2 weeks. That means that you're still in the UK, yes? It would appear that you are an Essex Uni student (at least your profile has a link to the union!). That's "near enough" to London.

Would you please consider meeting up with us at our little GreekChat get together which is this Thursday the 28th in London? I know you don't know us, but we wanted to invite you along. We will be at the Sherlock Holmes Pub on Northumberland (in Westminster near Charing Cross Station) at 7pm on Thursday, August 28th. We may be there slightly earlier, but definitely by 7pm. I do hope you'll consider stopping in to say hello! Besides, you can go in to London to pick up any extra clothes that you may need for recruitment!

Here's what we look like!

Left to right: Kelly (Navane), Stephanie (kittyuk) and Caroline (UKAXO)

I don't have Richard's picture handy but it doesn't matter. Just look for the three very loud ladies!

Oh my, that's such a sweet invitation! Unfortunately, i just left my house in Essex the other day to spend my last 2 weeks with my mum up in Newcastle, and i'm having my hair done on thursday... and, well you know what british transport is like, a bit unreliable and terribley expensive to get from one side of the country to the other!!! I would have probably popped along, but unfortunately will not be able to! However, do u recommend any shops that i'd be able to get appropriate clothes from? I usually buy things in topshop, river island, h+m.. places like that. I'm pretty sure, that most of my clothes are bit casual for the latter days of rush!

Thank you so much for all your help, i will definetely keep you all posted through recruitment, it's going to be an intense few weeks running up to departure (Sep 10th)! thanks again!

			Hi Hannah!
You should really send a PM to Aye Fee (she is our former President at UCSB and is now a Greek Advisor at UCSC). Rush at UCSB is fairly informal and she can point you in the right direction.

 Good luck!

LOL....that's ok. I figured that you'd probably be home and not at uni but I didn't know where your "home" is!

Oh boy, fashion isn't really my strong point! heheehe.....though, I do shop at the same places you do! I just spent a nice amount at River Island the other day!
I think TopShop might be a bit too flash for sorority recruitment. River Island and H+M might be good places to start. Think of nice skirts, trousers and tops from somewhere like Next, Laura Ashley or maybe even Debenhams.

Now I'm not suggesting dowdy and conservative floral dresses from Laura Ashley, but outfits which are stylish. In other words, TopShop's totally 80's hot pink net shirts with the black cargo trousers with all of the strings hanging down probably would look out of place at sorority recruitment.
But don't worry, like Laura said above, UCSB recuitment probably isn't a huuggee major deal. Just wear what you like and will make you feel confident!

Besides, no one will be paying attention to your clothes, they'll be paying attention to your cool accent!

I'm more the plain tshirts and jeans girl! a bit of mix and match doesn't go a miss tho!

Well, i'm definetely getting excited about rushing now, reading all these rush threads are getting me in the mood!! I'm not sure how it will work out, i'm sure it will all turn out well in the end tho!
Thankyou so much for all your help!

Just wanted to post a quick hello and welcome to GC to our newest international member.
UCSB is a great school...you will love it I am sure.

As Daffy KD said the weather hear has been totally bonkers, so definitely make sure you have at least a light cardigan because you never know. Santa Barbara typically has a little cooler weather just because they are at the coast.

The dresses you described sounded great! The black strapless and the pink sound great...As for white, you might possibly need it, and let me tell you to get it now if you can because it seems impossible to ever find it when it's needed. As you have probably figured out the first day is the most casual, as I am only about 100 or so miles from SB I can safely say that the women that go through at my Uni (though I'm only an alum helper at this point) all seem to dress casual and comfortable yet well put together. Does that make sense? So maybe like a casual day first date?

Anyhow, I've rambled on enough. If you have any questions be sure to let us know here and there will be many women to help you!
Cheers!
Suzanne
