I personally like the new page. There comes a time when too much information up front is not good. Topher noticed that time came, and changed to an elegant simplistic look. The coding behind the page is still relatively complicated, in the near future there will be A LOT more added with the financial records, TKE university, links to province websites added and more. It looks simple(as it’s suppose to), but server side it’s not so simple.
Making a page jam packed with information and all flashy may be great for some fraternities, but also look at one of our goals – bringing more alumni back into the fraternity. These are guys that a large portion will be using dialups instead of broadband, that get confused with a lot of information and links all over the place. A lot of these people prefer a simple LOOKING page to one that takes 10 minutes to download a flash intro, or they have to read for 5 minutes just to find the link they want.
And yes we are judged as a whole by our IHQ website just as each chapter is judged by their website (some which haven’t been updated in well over a year) But I for one have complete faith in our staff. If you spend a good amount of time looking at websites and researching design, you will notice that there is starting to be a turn for less information up front, and simpler navigation to get wherever you want to go within a shallow but comprehensive website.
I say let Yahoo and Microsoft jam all their information in the first page, we are aiming for a completely different audience, and I think the new website is perfectly geared for TKE’s future. It’s flexible, it’s expandable, and it’s manageable.
There's an old saying in web design - "just because you can, doesn't mean you should."
