In addition, a lot of girls around here go by double names (Mary Holland, Anne Reed etc.) or middle names (Mary Logan is called Logan). I have many friends, male and female, who have as we call them, "last names for first names" (ie: Hayes, Bailey, Manning, Shaw, Keating...). They're a great way to incorporate family names into your child's name, but if a daughter's name is Charlotte Collins Smith and she goes by Collins, Laura Yorke Jones and is called Yorke, or William McSwain Davis and he goes by McSwain, it turns a few heads in the "real world". More so for girls who have untraditional names like Collins or Yorke, but it's always trouble. So my solution is simple - I'll name my kids what they'll be called. I mean, Katherine/Katie is no problem but their first name will definitely be what they go by. Trust me, it saves a lot of trouble!
oh my land, that is soooooooooo Southern. My dad has his mom's maiden name for his middle name, but he would never go by it.

My mom named me Sheila so I wouldn't get nicknames, but I did anyway (Shy, Shee etc). I just thank God in the sky above that she didn't go along with her friend who jokingly wrote "for little Robert or Roberta" (!) on the baby gift. (Robert is my dad) Her cousin wanted me to be Tana...which I kind of dig...but I don't think I am a Tana.

My cousin is Gloria Jean (who I think was an old movie star) and in the family we have never called her anything but Jeanie. Add to that that she's been married since I was very tiny and I always think of her by her married name. So when someone asked me once if I was related to Gloria mylastname, I just stared at them like "huh"?

oh, someone mentioned about the "old" sounding names. I think it will be hilarious when all the Tiffanys and Ashleys are in their 80's and Gertrude and Edna are the new "hip" names.
