You would have to work VERY hard on the elliptical machine to burn an equivalent amount of calories to running. The "calories burned" count on elliptical machines usually overestimates by 200-300 calories per hour (perhaps even more, depending on the model), so you're usually not getting an accurate calorie count.

I know that for me, running is the only thing I've tried that makes me drop weight -- and I do drop LOTS of pounds when I'm running.

While the elliptical machine is "no impact," it can still cause knee injuries if you go over a certain rotations per minute (I forget the actual number). And because it forces your body into what is an unnatural stride for some people, I've heard that it can cause other weird joint injuries as well.

I LOVE the elliptical machine . . . but I love running more.
