I'm with you. Caroline is a separate name from Carolyn. I absolutely hate it when people call me Caroline.
As for the nickname - some of my family and really close friends call me Carrie. When I started kindergarten there were two Carolyns in the class and both of us also went by Carrie so the teacher told the first Carolyn, you'll be Carrie from now on which meant I was always Carolyn through school from then on.
