Please pick up a copy of the December issue of Ebony. It contains an article entitled "Whites in Black Sororities and Fraternities". It is um .... interesting, to say the least. I know this topic has been discussed at length in this or other forums, and I'm therefore not trying to rekindle that fire. I have my opinions on the matter and I stand by them. I just wanted to draw your attention to the article (specifically the Alpha Kappa Alpha portion).

I hope you all wont mind THIS brutha's perspective on that article.
There is a need for diversity in certain aspects of society, but diversifying Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity,Inc. was one of the biggest historical tragedies of all time. Most Brothers of my Fraternity would know this. For those of you that don't, consider the time of the founding of Alpha. We were founded 39 years after the END of slavery. The Knightridders were at their peak of activity. The JEWELS(founders)were investigated by the U.S. government for suspicion of being a communist organization because of our committment to "pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps"-meaning the promotion and financial support of higher education on the part of the JEWELS and first initiates. The agriculturalists feared losing their free/cheap labor pool to colleges and trade schools, so they enlisted the aid of the Knightridders and other similar organizations to keep the hearty, fearless, black man in check. My Fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, was one of the very few organizations that directly opposed these groups, and made a major contribution to the uplift of former AFRICAN SLAVES.
WITH ALL DUE RESPECT TO ALL AMERICANS, ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY INC. SPEAKS TO THE NEED OF AFRICANS LIVING IN THIS COUNTRY FIRST- THEN TO OTHERS! Thus, our colors-BLACK AND OLD GOLD-were chosen specifically for the representation of OUR ranks, and OUR people.
