What's the deal with John Mayer anyway?

I keep hearing people on here talking about John Mayer. Am I living in a bubble? I've never heard his music, and yes, I do listen to the radio. So what kind of music does he do, and what is so great about him?

Sorry, but I think he sucks. His enunciation is awful and it really makes my ears hurt.

I'm just annoyed because (at the risk of sounding like a valley girl) he's SO 2 years ago, lol. He's one of those guys who everyone loved to pass around on Napster in the dorms my freshman year. A few songs are catchy. He is awesome in concert.

I think he writes pretty decent songs but it makes me sick the way people turn him into this musical icon. His treatment at the Grammy's this year= Alicia Keys the year before. Yet we haven't heard much from her lately......

I know there are a TON of John Mayer fans on the board and don't get me wrong, I can see why people like him. I am more irritated with people acting like they 'discovered' him (you KNOW people that do that, i guarantee it) and us treating him like a god.

I will admit, I do have a picture of him up as my desktop on my home computer, but I'm over him. It was one of those "2 minute" things and never changed my desktop.

not to be a big pickypants but the youngest "Gen Xers" (if you go by the book that started it all to begin with) are 30 or 29 at most.

John Mayer - I first heard him on the independent station here. I like him fine, I think got popular cause he's an antidote to the boy bands (like Norah Jones is an antidote to Britney Smears).

his acoustic stuff is a lot better than his studio mumbo-jumbo. the dude CAN play. however, i have said this before in another thread... he would be a lot better if he played with a bag over his head. the facial expressions freak me out. but i DLed some of his live stuff recently and enjoyed it so I am gonna see him in concert this summer.

But no sorry... I am a dmb fan for life and there is no comparisson. and jack johnson is a little better than john imo.

John Mayer is good, but hes pretty overplayed now...I loved your body is a wonderland like 2 years ago..now i changed the station if it comes on the radio..I'm kinda over it...besides, Howie Day and Jason Mraz are A LOT better

and i'm going to see Howie tonight weeeee!!

I wouldn't say he's like Dave Matthews . . . their voices sound similar and they both play acoustic guitar so there were a lot of comparisons drawn, but I think anyone who compares the two is missing a lot of the more subtle details.

I wouldn't say Jason Mraz or Howie Day is necessarily any better -- I think John Mayer has equal amounts or more talent -- but since they're less overplayed they still sound newer, more fresh sounding and therefore less boring. I do like John Mayer but I do think that the more the radio plays his stuff, the more boring it all sounds.

And yes, those kids who just "discovered" him this summer and think they're really cool for doing so are pretty obnoxious . . . but that happens with every artist.

I liked him because he was a "music major drop-out done good". I think he went to the Boston Conservatory or somewhere notorious like that. Some of his songs (lyrics) are sorta poignant for the 20-25 groups, but they all start to sound alike after all. The "No Such Thing" song that was huge last year isn't my favorite. My favorite is 1983. Other than that...ehhh. But he's hardly a Dave Matthews. And yeah I dig Jason Mraz too.
