When I was single with no children, I "adopted" the daughter of my ladyfriend that did my nails as my goddaughter. I visted her school, helped with her homework, took her to restaurants, etc. One day, my friend says that she's been praying for me to have a baby so that I would settle down, I was like WHY would you ask God to give me a baby before a husband!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think sometimes a single, childless, young educated black women is envied in our communities, the whole world is literally at her feet and she has no responsibilities to ground her. Everyone holds their breath, knowing that she now has the resources to abandon the community, praying silently that she doesn't. Sigh
