I completely understand that. Pining away for someone, I've been there and done that and not going back. I think that it is easier for me just to be direct and ask what's going on with someone in my life than to start something new with someone new. I figure what's the worst that he can say? I don't like you or want you anymore. No biggie. His loss.
But when things are over, they are so over for me that I cut them out of my life completely. I'm cold that way. Just call me Ice Cream.
