As a person that does not read Vanity Fair, I would not have known anything about Dame Edna until I read this thread.
As a hispanic woman, I too was irritated and much more than a little bit offended. It was absolutely uncalled for and rude.
We live in such an overly PC society...you can't really make these kinds of comments (especially in print) and expect that people will be amused. At least if it was a comedian, you could interpret the body language and/or voice to determine the fashion in which the comment is being made.
