I think the music and the voices have changed. Back in the day, if you couldn't sing, no recording contract. Today, a lot of artists can't really sing. I like to call them studio kings/queens, because the studio makes them sound like they have real talent. Then when you hear them sing live you say to
yourself "What the h***?...."
You are definitely right about having a look that sells. Look at Adina Howard. No talent whatsoever, but she puts her behind on the cover of her CD and everybody and their mother is out buying it.
BTW, who is Cheryl Lynn? I don't remember her.
