Yeah, the game can get stale if the rules stay stagnant for too long. The current system is an Edition (whole rule system) every 3-4 years, and rules tweaks every 3-6 months (army rules, game objective changes). Most, if not every army gets a rulebook of their own called a Codex, which can also drastically change how an army plays on the table.
It is a decent cognitive load, but once you learn up to a certain level it transfers pretty easily and quickly.
Using magnets is an easy way to preserve weapon options, as the connection points would be countersunk magnets instead of the usual plastic or super glue. Many people also put magnets under the bases of their models to use on a metal rack to secure the models for transport in a travel case.
