I go back and forth on the carry on or check mentality. THe advantage of checking is that you have less for them to decide to search. If you are going aay for a longer trip and your bag is going to be densly packed I would check it and not have to have them rifle through your undies etc. if your selected. Also, pay a lot of attention to what you pak and ehat you are carrying on you.
As far as searchs are concerned, I had read that you could request a same sex search which implied that it was not aoutomatic but I am not sure about that. I have not been stopped and search yet (knock on wood) but I know a number of people who have.
