I did not say minorities were sad, I said the concept of a ________-only anything was sad. By sad I didn't mean pathetic, I meant that it's unfortunate because it would be so much better if we could have a pageant that didn't focus on race at all (however unlikely that may be), but rather the quality of the person regardless of race.
Yes, unity is for the most part only a concept and not reality. (That doesn't mean it's not worth it to work towards unity in the hope that someday -- even a very far-off someday -- we will have it or at least be closer to it.) However, the more _____-only things we create, the less likely it'll be that it will become reality. One of you mentioned the fact that these pageants were created because whites wouldn't let the minorities into their beauty pageants. That's great, that's fine that they were created. As I said earlier, I don't think that there is necessarily a problem with a blacks-only beauty pageant. However, as it was pointed out, when the first Miss America pageant was created, non-whites weren't allowed to enter. Now they are, and we've had at least a couple non-white winners of the pageant. And why? Because non-whites fought for and won the right to enter the pageant, etc. If they decide that these kinds of things are no longer worth fighting for because they can create their own pageants, it becomes less and less likely that racism and prejudice will decrease -- people will just rope themselves off into their little categories based on race, religion or what have you, and that will be the end of it.
