What a shame that others want to put down a wonderful org. I hope that those young women come to realize how hateful their comments are and they apologize.

Why do sororities bash each other? We should be building each other up for the greater Panhel good. Some of my closest friends have been from other groups.

The hyper competitive environment and "tiers" that are practically carved in stone has not changed at Ole Miss in decades. It is really sad.

That's so sad. My niece (now an alumna) was a Theta at Bama. She CHOSE Theta. She had a ridiculously high HS GPA, is bilingual and, IIRC, started a chapter of the International Justice Mission there, was a HQ finalist, and (shallow wise) is ridic pretty and blonde. But, hey, she chose Theta. As did another friend of mine who was a cheerleader for the school. Yeah. Theta must suck so much at Bama--at least according to GR. Ugh, Longhorn Mom. I'm not a Theta (obvi), but don't mess with my family. I wish girls went with where they truly felt at home and not listen to 'tent talk' or other crud.

Ladies you all rock! Thank you! Its amazing how ugly these young women can be and unfortunately the apple does not fall far from the tree.
Luckily for Ole Miss my daughter has also met some amazing, supportive actives that had nothing but good to say about all of Ole Miss's sororities.
Lets just hope that the more time distance there is from rush the less nasty it gets as well.

There is very little REAL Panhellenic spirit and support at Ole Miss among the chapters. There is some lip service of support, especially when a chapter colonizes, but it doesn't last long.

I hope that you ladies tell your Thetas to hold their heads high and wear those letters proudly. Every girl deserves a sisterhood to call their own, even if you are not thin, gorgeous, a beauty queen or popular. Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
Yes! my daughter is an Ole Miss Theta and I sadly remember the post-bid trash talk. I am proud to say she sees Theta as a life-long journey and has worked hard to be a productive member. Adversities like this only serve to create strong women.

Warning: this is going to upset people. So be it. I am speaking my truth.

What the issue is: all the negative hate and talk towards any chapter eventually results in the closing of said chapter. And guess what happens? Another chapter becomes the target. That one closes. It's a domino effect. The word gets out that the campus is toxic and non-Panhellenic. No one wants to expand there and have that experience repeated ad nauseum. The system limps along until something happens that results in either (a) massive change or (b) closure. Question:how elite can a chapter be when it has 300-400+ members? Seriously? Is that what the "top tier" wants? What does it say when we trash each other? Does that make you feel better? It makes me feel small and petty.

IMO the "top chapters" at Ole Miss, and other similar campuses, are fueled by alumnae and wanna-bes who are so into social status that they cannot see past their noses. They have no concept of the meaning of Panhellenic spirit and they often ignore their own sorority values as a result. They are hanging on to the glory of days gone by. They insist on perpetuating decades-old myths. Didn't we just see it here in the UT thread with that non-Greek mom? Yes, we did.

Frankly I don't give a rat's ass about tiers. I simply don't care, they don't mean zip to me. If you've been here long enough you know that about me. And I just shrug and shake my head at those who do. I'm comfortable in my own skin and I know my place in the food chain. So, whatever, ladies, whatever. Yes I am not from the South and so what? I know compassion and kindness (and the lack thereof) when I see it. So, morally I'll uphold the standard of love (and love the unloveable although my teeth hurt from clenching), and socially I'll do my best to be the widest influence for good (which means I'll not give up being Panhellenic, I will embrace all women who are Greek, and I mean all of you). Intellectually, the highest scholarship tells me that calling a mean girl "nice" and "classy" is an absurd fallacy. The emperor has no clothes.

Honestly, some of it with the college age girls is immaturity and a competitive nature. Some of the actives who talked trash about other sororities behind closed doors in my chapter are now, at ages 45+, ones with the strongest Panhellenic spirit. Sometimes it takes age and a bit of wisdom to see how silly things we deem so important as an 18 year old are.

ETA: I will say my smaller school (15,000 students, so smaller than Ole Miss, etc) had a great Panhel spirit. We hung out with women of all different groups. I attribute some of that to living in a Greek Dorm, with all the sororities having a floor in the dorm, vs. having houses and being more isolated.

I have so much to say on this but somehow can't find the right words without going "ballistic" and cussing like a sailor. So I will just keep it polite and say "What Thetalady said" :-)

Theta mom's out there give your daughters a big hug and tell them that they actually belong to one of the best sisterhoods on campus. Easier said then done but ignore the talk and wear those letters with pride.

I am perplexed about the tiers and negativity that is apparent at Ole Miss. Generally when that is the case the numbers are much smaller. Girls drop out of rush as soon as they don't have the only good chapters, and resulting quota is lower. So at Ole Miss, girls are staying with the program and presumably joining (or is the chapter in question only having half the girls show up?) but still everyone is bitching? It seems like people are talking smack but it's not slowing anybody down. The numbers at Ole Miss are huge, and adding chapters means, yes, there is always going to be a last choice, but who cares? Or am I missing something significant here?

Stop me if I'm wrong, but I'm guessing that there are enough women from out of state or who are not in "those certain" social circles going through rush to fill the "lower tier" chapters. However, that doesn't mean that the "top" fraternities or student government etc positions will be accessible to them.

The irony, of course, is if you took the names off the chapters and just showed pictures and lists of student activities, probably no one could figure out which chapter was which. It makes me think of when one of my sisters was dating a guy in supercool fraternity, and we all agreed that if he was in not-as-cool fraternity, she wouldn't find him attractive or put up with his crap.

Also, if you look at pictures of the girls from different houses at Texas as well, you can't see much of a difference between them as far as attractiveness.
