Those of us from the south know the nuances, so the "civility" doesn't fool us often. It's like the difference between the two most popular uses of "Bless her heart", which can be used to show sympathy or to show no mercy.

It's so funny you use this example as I have been discussing this with my southern friends. I told them I'll be super offended if they use that statement with me. Thanks to GC, I know better.

THIS^^^ Yes, usually I really am being sympathetic with the phrase but sometimes the claws are extended!
