Nebraska also got rid of bed quota in 2010. So far, so good! They've grown but in a controlled way. I'm sure growth at IU would be more robust.
I think at Ohio State is was a combination of efforts on all sides. I also believe there was a staff change in the Greek life office and it all came to be. So far, so good. The cap was terrible!

Nebraska has not had a bed quota in a long time. At least in the late 90s they did not. When I was in a chapter there in the 2000s, all PNMs who 'played fair' by attending all parties they were invited to and listing all of the chapters they preffed, were guaranteed a spot ( barring all weird unforseen circumstances like the PNM being in a a drug bust post pref party). Greek affairs would set a campus total based on the number of pref cards signed, each chapter then had an individual quota to meet total. Again, no bed quota at Nebraska in a long time. They just stopped using their modified RFM a few years ago.

My mistake. I should have stated that they started using fully used RFM in 2010. Well according to the RFM report I have on hand. Yes, before that they were still hand matching or the modified RFM. I thought they were still using the bed quota when they were hand matching.

My heart goes out to her and to you. Are you close enough that you can drive down and take her to a movie or dinner and get her off campus? If you are, consider it.

I'm so sorry.
This is the part of sorority life I really dislike.

I am so sorry for your daughter. I am in my mid-20s now, but I went through IU formal recruitment TWICE before eventually transferring and joining Pi Phi at an SEC school (that's how hard IU is, think about that).
I think the daughter of hopeful_mom is a prime example of girls at IU maximizing all of their options and still ending up bid-less. Too often people on here lament that PNMs aren't being open-minded or are being elitist. There is a PROBLEM where a PNM goes to three pref rounds and still ends up bid-less. That just did not happen at my alma mater.

And THIS is what is wrong with this system!

I am so sorry. To fully maximize your options and walk away with nothing is the reason this system is unfair and just wrong. Someone needs to do the right thing. It is time.

In response to the numerous IU alumnae who claim that 100+ person pledge classes are too big: are you ever going to be close friends with more than 10 or so women from your pledge class anyway? I had about 70 in mine and now at my alma mater I think pledge classes are in the 80s somewhere, though it does fluctuate.
You people want 45 person pledge classes in order to be elite at the expense of hundreds of girls who will have to forlornly roam IU's campus seeing you in your letters, like I did until I wised up and transferred. I know you'll all claim that there's more to IU than being greek, but guess what, you ARE greek and have no idea what it's like to desperately be on the outside looking in. Joining clubs and other organizations is a valid pursuit of time while in college, but you're kidding if you think it's a replacement for greek life.

Supposedly, most people can only handle 4-6 close relationships, so having more than a handful of friends is very unlikely. I'm glad you brought this up. I was close to some of my pledge class, some of the year ahead of me, and some of the year behind me. That's pretty much it.

I agree. And every one of us who has a chapter at IU should be embarrassed that it is allowed to continue. Are we individually responsible? No. But we're part of the organizations that continue this year after year.
I'm truly disappointed in my own organization for (apparently) not being willing to take a lead in changing this. It really is in direct opposition to what we believe in and stand for as Tri Deltas.

Absolutely! This should not happen. Just sad right now for this young woman.
